Hi, I’m Nic Perrins: a professional writer, editor, and student of Forensic Linguistics, based in the Derbyshire Dales. Words are my living and I’m passionate about them, so when they’re misused, I tend to have an opinion on it.
My research does not attempt to reveal anything new about the cases in question, but what it does do, is highlight the injustice of how victims of crime are beaten down through the use of divisive language.
Those with voices drip-feed their own rhetoric into the public domain until it’s accepted as truth. They cause irreversible damage to cases, people and lives; and it’s time they were held accountable. So it’s up to us to recognise it, and to call it out for what it is.
News headlines, police statements, TV interviews; nothing should be taken at face value. Every word matters.
During my research, I came across an outstanding podcast called The Crime Analyst, hosted by Laura Richards. In it, she encouraged her listeners to become ‘activists’.
I’m in.
